L\u2019eliminazione completa del cloro dalla composizione dei gas refrigeranti ha portato alla nascita degli idrofluorocarburi (HFC), gas refrigeranti che hanno effetto nullo per quanto riguarda il buco dell\u2019ozono. Tuttavia anche tali fluidi non sono perfettamente eco-compatibili, in quanto la loro liberazione in atmosfera contribuisce ad aumentare l\u2019effetto di surriscaldamento della Terra (effetto serra). Per tale ragione gi\u00e0 si prospetta una graduale loro eliminazione, soprattutto in quegli impianti dove possono essere sostituiti da altre tipologie di refrigeranti meno inquinanti (ossia che presentano un valore del GWP molto pi\u00f9 basso). Oggigiorno i gas refrigeranti HFC trovano maggior impiego come componenti di miscele. L\u2019opportuno dosaggio di pi\u00f9 fluidi HFC (ed eventualmente anche insieme agli idrocarburi) permette di ottenere determinati composti che posseggono le caratteristiche termodinamiche necessarie a sostituire i refrigeranti CFC ed HCFC negli impianti esistenti.<\/p>\n
